Transportation Engineer Trainee (Land Surveyor)

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for an exciting Transportation Engineer Trainee position in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, District 3 Surveys Section, in New Haven.

ABOUT US

The District 3 Surveys section performs various mapping, field, and land survey duties utilizing CADD (computer aided design and drafting)systems and other computer applications to; prepare, revise and edit property acquisition and release mapping; develop topographic mapping and DTM’s (Digital Terrain Models) for future Highway and Railroad construction projects and support ongoing construction projects. Engineer Trainees will operate survey field instruments such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels and GPS receivers. Trainees will perform complex computations for survey control networks and perform related duties as required.
THE ROLE - PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY

Transportation Engineer Trainees receive training to develop technical engineering skills and knowledge. After successfully completing a one-year training program, trainees are eligible for promotion to the target class of Transportation Engineer 1 (Engineering) or Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering) after successful completion of the (1) year training program. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week and is in the P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidate must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s
  • license as incumbents in this class will be required to travel
  • General knowledge of land surveying and transportation
  • construction engineering theories, principles, and methods
  • Skill in use of computer aided design software (MicroStation
  • preferred) and other computer applications including Word and
  • Excel
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to read and analyze construction plans and estimates
